Releasing trauma & negative emotions using essential oils.

No-one rides for free
— Brene Brown

In some way, shape or form, we all experience trauma in our lives. There are ranges to what this trauma looks like for each individual and there are those of us who have experienced devastating trauma from a very young age.

Though many do, we do not have to live with the emotions driven by this trauma for our whole lives.

Using our thoughts, we are able to re-write the software of our minds and instead of believing our identity is created by past events, we can create our lives based around any greatness we can imagine for our future. Starting now.

Trauma can create emotional barrier to how well we live our lives even decades later.

This is because - after the trauma - we began to associate ourselves and our belief in 'who we are' by the emotion that the trauma triggers in us.

Emotions aren’t bad in themselves though. They're simply the end part of an experience.

Rather it is how long that they last, or that we allow them to eat away our opportunity for gratitude at life, that is the question.

Traumatic experiences turns on the stress hormone (cortisol) release that puts us in 'flight' mode. We can become as addicted to these hormones as if they were drugs (in a way they are).

When experiencing the emotion of rejection as a child the body releases stress hormones coinciding with this emotion that arises from this abandonment.

If we have multiple experiences triggering the same emotion, then we not only become familiar with the emotions as a belief of 'self' but we become hooked on the hormone released by the body in that time, then subconsciously seeking or creating more experiences in our lives where we drive that emotion again.

We may express ourselves in a way which would lead others to abandon (reject) from us.

This may look like acting out, lying, cheating, stealing or by anger or emotional manipulation.

Or it may look putting up walls of protection so high no one else can be let all the way in. Maybe you have a sense of 'I can do this all myself, I don't need anyone else'.

If we, as children, experience guilt or shame regularly, we may tie that to our identity and seek out experiences in adulthood where we can feel these emotions again.

Even though these emotions aren't 'feel-good' states, we have tied them to our identity and therefore believe that these emotions are an ingrained part of who we are. Our identity rests on the shoulders of them.

Essential oils and trauma-release

Researchers have shown how aromas cause the brain to react. They activate the hypothalamus gland, the pituitary gland, the body’s hormones and the limbic system.

The limbic system links the left and right brain and the voluntary and involuntary nervous system centres and is frequently dysregulated in the aftermath of trauma.

Smell is processed in the limbic system, the oldest part of the brain in evolutionary terms. The limbic system houses our emotions, sexual feelings, memory and learning.

All living things vibrate with energy, including the human body and essential oils. Essential oils are able to raise the vibrations of the physical body and lower energy vibrations, such as repressed emotions and stressed our states are unable to survive in the same manner.

Essential oils may help to create balance and peace within the body.

Essential oils alone are unable to release the trauma for us. This work is up to us, and I cannot recommend the work of Dr. Joe Dispenza [website] enough for those who wish to find a place to start.

The vibrational frequency or energy of the hundreds of different essential offers many different supportive properties.

Essential oils for releasing trauma

How I use my essential oils.

I use these oils diluted in touch 'roller' bottles (glass vials with a metal roller ball I can touch to my energy centres, temples, behind my ears, as a pure-fume, roll onto my neck or even under my nose).

I diffuse these oils regularly in my home in a cool water diffuser.

I may drip some directly onto the palms of my hand and inhale a few deep breaths in and out before sitting to do some meditation or when I feel emotions of overwhelm/forget to be in my grateful and future thinking state.

Lemongrass: the oil of cleansing

Emotions: obstructed, blocked/stuck, toxic energy

It’s a powerful cleanser of energy. Lemongrass helps you enter a healing mode or cleansing state so that you can easily let go of old, limiting beliefs, toxic energies and negativity.

Lemongrass allows you to move forward without any hesitation and gets you to commit to a healing path, emotionally, physically and spiritually where change is a regular occurrence.

Ylang Ylang: The Oil of the Inner Child

Ylang Ylang is truly the oil of the heart (one of the best oils for our heart chakra) because it helps us to connect to our own heart, process things from the heart and heal emotional traumas. It’s the oil of the inner child and that means it helps connect us to a source of joy that comes from within. Think of when you were a child how in the moment you were, always wanting to play, releasing your emotions easily and trusting the process of life because that is what you knew how to do.

Geranium: The Oil of Love & Trust

Geranium helps a person regain trust in the world and in others. It restores confidence in the innate goodness of others. This heart-center oil helps us to heal, tear down barriers, release anger, and manage overwhelming emotions. It might be good for a person who has been deeply hurt in the past and/or who struggles to open up or express their emotions. It facilitates trust when the trust was lost due to difficult life circumstances. It also helps in re-connecting and re-establishing a bond with one’s mother and father.

Lavender: The Oil of Communication

Lavender helps with our ability to communicate honestly and openly. It gives us greater intuition and clarity. It quiets our racing minds and calms any insecurities that are felt when one risks sharing their innermost thoughts and feelings.

Lavender addresses a deep fear of being seen and heard. People that need Lavender are often hiding within, blocking all forms of true expression of themselves. They may be going through the motions of outward expression, but they’re actually really holding back and not sharing their innermost thoughts and feelings. Their expression is not connected to their heart and soul so it remains hidden and unrevealed.

Black Pepper: The Oil of Unmasking

Black Pepper helps to lift the veil and unmasks the façades we tend to put on to hide undesirable aspects of ourselves. It assists the individual in examining things with honesty and clarity.

By taking off our mask and seeking to understand seemingly inappropriate feelings and behaviours, we allow our true thoughts and emotions to come forward and unblock the flow of growth.

Black pepper essential oil is also wonderful for reducing addictive cravings to nicotine.

Frankincense: The Oil of Truth

Because it reveals deceptions and false truths. The burden of carrying untruths, lies and deceptions is so debilitating, most people don’t realise that to let go of these lower vibration states of energy would be very uplifting and centering.

Once we are able to connect to our truth and our spiritual side, we can embrace our true purpose in the world and become more spiritually driven rather than ego-driven.

Because of the high vibrational aroma of Frankincense, it helps us release parts of our mind and ego which hold us back from connecting with our soul, as well as release feelings of unworthiness and insecurity.

Juniper Berry: The Oil of Night

Juniper Berry essential oil is really powerful. Personally it is a favourite oil as I also have a history of alcohol addiction in my family and this oil is a wonderful support for alcoholism.

Juniper Berry has an encouraging and supportive effect on those who fear the dark or obscure part of themselves. It helps people to understand that the very things they fear are actually there as teachers.

It particularly helps those who have a resistance to the type of digging deep that is required for healing.

Rather than running away or hiding from the unknown, Juniper Berry helps the individual dig deeper and learn the lesson from the fear.

I can't recommend essential oils enough for anyone who is doing personal work to recover or release trauma, addiction or co-dependancy. They are integral to my own experiences. Once brought in to support your process, you will understand how wonderful and powerful they really are.
